Project:
Forum USA, located in Connecticut, wanted to go national with a Student Forum. They needed a classy, understated brochure that left the targeted audience wanting to know more about them. The company leaders could then make sales calls with more specific information when asking for funding.

Design Solution:
This booklet does not have a lot of copy describing the organization. It uses lots of images of high profile celebrities involved in the lectures, presentations, and debates along with some brief descriptions of what the organization is trying to accomplish. The client and I sat down and worked the design together after the initial design roughs were presented. I don’t usually do this, but the client and I worked well together trying out different solutions. We pushed and pulled the design and got it to the printer quickly for the tight deadline the client was working with.

Project:
FM GLobal has affiliated companies that offer services to enhance the insurance aspect of this international company. This pocketfolder- combined-brochure describes the offerings of the affiliate company. The design had to follow the strict design standards of the parent company but still have its own look.

Design Solution:
I worked the grid horizontally and vertically in this brochure. Each page describes an offering by the company and is set up in the grid with an overview description at the bottom and bulleted items in the middle horizontal section. Photos played an important role in giving each page its own look — playing with scale and placement.

Federation EIL — Worldwide Network of The Experiment in International Living, is a Swiss-registered association that coordinates a network of education exchange programs including travel programs, foreign language training, academic study abroad, au pair homestays, individual homestays and voluntary community service. As a nonprofit, Federation EIL needed an overview brochure that could work like a pocketfolder to house additional specific material for each request received. They also wanted a smaller tri-fold version of the folder to use in tradeshows and send out when additional information was not needed. (See example in flyers.)

Design Solution:
Pocketfolders are very expensive to print and produce so after checking for press size with the printer, I designed a three panel piece with a 3" lip that folded up to hold additional inserts. Photo and quotes were placed so that the reader would know that something was inside the lip and would pull it down. The majority of the photos were from the actual programs offered. A few images that represented aspects of the programs were bought from stock image houses. The blues matched the logo and letterhead (the inserts would be printed on the letterhead). Later, the client asked for 5 X 4' posters to match this folder for a trade show in Switzerland. They were pulled together quickly and economically using existing photos and design themes.

Project:
Vermont Circuits, Inc. makes circuitry boards in Brattleboro, VT. They approached me (by way of referral) to design and produce a pocketfolder and inserts that would have a 5 year+ shelf-life. They wanted the casual reader to know immediately that they sold circuit boards, yet the circuit boards shown needed to be a very high-end board so that the circuit board audience would know they made very detailed and fine circuit boards. They also wanted the application where the boards used shown.

Design Solution:
After finding the perfect stock image, we discovered one of their competitors was already using it — one of the dangers of stock photos. So we took a bit more time on the project — came up with a more specific theme, and hired an illustrator. I then used stock photos as an overlay to show applications where their boards are used. We used a Vermont mountain photo on the back of the folder (with map and directions) as well as a border at the top of the inserts. The inserts were printed with the border and headline only so that the information could be updated and printed at their offices as needed thus giving the inserts a longer usage.
